Choosing a school is, without doubt, one of the biggest decisions a parent makes. In Ahmedabad, that choice has become both easier and harder. On one hand, the city now has dozens of CBSE schools. On the other hand, sorting the good fits from the rest takes time.

Many families prefer CBSE because it follows the national NCERT syllabus. It also lines up well with exams like JEE and NEET. And if you move to another city, it’s easy to switch to another CBSE school.

In this guide, we list the best-known CBSE schools in Ahmedabad, grouped by area. For each one, you’ll find the classes offered, key facts, the official website and a Google Maps link. We also explain how admissions work, the age rules for Class 1, the RTE quota, fees and how to check a school’s CBSE status yourself.

How we checked: We confirmed each school’s CBSE status using its official website, official lists and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan’s regional site. This is not a ranking. Instead, it’s a starting list to help you shortlist. Boards, classes and campuses can change, so always double-check on the CBSE SARAS portal before you apply.

Why More Ahmedabad Parents Are Choosing CBSE

Over the last 15 years, the number of CBSE schools in the city has grown fast. So, what’s behind it? First, Ahmedabad has pulled in many families from other states, mainly through IT, industry and GIFT City. Naturally, these families often want a national board. Next, more local parents now aim for national exams like JEE and NEET. As a result, they prefer a syllabus built around NCERT. Finally, new suburbs like Shela, Gota and Chandkheda needed new schools. Many of them chose CBSE from day one.

What Is CBSE?

CBSE stands for the Central Board of Secondary Education. Basically, it’s a national school board run under the Government of India. Today, thousands of schools across India and abroad follow it. Also, it runs the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams for its schools.

CBSE schools mostly follow textbooks from NCERT, the national council for school education. As a result, what your child learns in Ahmedabad is much the same as in Delhi, Pune or Bengaluru. You can learn more on the official CBSE website.

Why Many Parents Choose CBSE

  • National syllabus: The same core syllabus runs across India. So, moving cities is easier.
  • Exam-friendly: NCERT books form the base for national entrance exams like JEE and NEET.
  • Balanced load: The syllabus is broad, but usually lighter than some other boards.
  • English and Hindi: Most CBSE schools teach in English, with Hindi as a key language.
  • Wide choice: Ahmedabad has many CBSE schools, from budget to premium.

CBSE vs Other Boards in Ahmedabad

Schools Often Wrongly Listed as CBSE

Many online lists get this wrong. So, before you apply, note that these well-known schools are not CBSE, or only some campuses are.

  • Anand Niketan Shilaj: ICSE/ISC. (Satellite is mainly ICSE and Cambridge.)
  • Eklavya School: ICSE/ISC.
  • Calorx Olive International School: IB only.
  • Ahmedabad International School: IB, Cambridge and Gujarat board, not CBSE.
  • Zydus School, Vejalpur: ICSE/ISC. Only the Godhavi campus is CBSE.
  • St. Kabir, Naranpura: Gujarat state board.
  • H.B. Kapadia (Memnagar, Chandkheda): Gujarat state board. Only the Chhatral branch is CBSE.

Also, note that DPS East in Hathijan lost its CBSE affiliation in December 2019. Today, it says it follows the state board.

How to Check If a School Is Really CBSE

Luckily, this takes just a few minutes, and it’s worth it. Here’s how.

  1. Go to SARAS. First, open the CBSE SARAS portal.
  2. Search the school. Next, search by state (Gujarat), district (Ahmedabad) or school name.
  3. Check the details. Then, look at the affiliation number, the level (secondary for Class 10, senior secondary for Class 12) and the validity date.
  4. Match the address. Finally, make sure the address matches the campus you’re visiting.

Also, ask the school to show its affiliation letter. A genuine school will happily share it.

CBSE Schools by Budget

Fees differ a lot between schools. We don’t list exact fees, since they change each year. Still, here’s a rough way to think about it.

  • Low cost: Kendriya Vidyalayas charge very little. However, seats are limited, and central government staff get priority.
  • Mid-range: Many private CBSE schools, like large chain schools, sit here. They usually offer good basics at fair prices.
  • Premium: Schools with big campuses, many activities and extra boards cost the most.

In any case, always ask for the full, FRC-approved fee list before you decide.

How to Choose the Right CBSE School

In truth, there’s no single “best” school. Instead, the right school is the one that fits your child and your family. Here’s what to think about.

  • Distance: A short commute means more time for rest and play. So, try to keep travel under 30 minutes.
  • Classes offered: Check if the school goes up to Class 12, or only to Class 10.
  • Streams in Class 11: Ask which streams (science, commerce, humanities) and subjects are offered.
  • Class size: Smaller classes usually mean more attention for each child.
  • Teachers: Ask about teacher training and how long teachers stay.
  • Facilities: Look at labs, library, sports grounds and safety.
  • Activities: Check for music, art, sports, clubs and competitions.
  • Values and culture: Visit, watch how students behave, and trust your gut.
  • Fees: Ask for the full fee list, including transport and activities.

Questions to Ask on a School Visit

  1. Is the school CBSE-affiliated up to Class 10 or Class 12?
  2. How many students are in each class?
  3. What is the teacher-to-student ratio?
  4. Which streams and subjects are offered in Class 11 and 12?
  5. How does the school support children who need extra help?
  6. What safety steps are in place on campus and on school buses?
  7. How often do teachers talk to parents?
  8. What is the full yearly fee, and has the FRC approved it?
  9. How much homework do students get?
  10. What do past students go on to do?

Nursery, KG and the New School Structure

Many CBSE schools in Ahmedabad start from nursery or pre-primary. So, if your child is small, you may apply earlier than Class 1.

Under the National Education Policy 2020, school now has four stages. First comes the early stage, for ages 3 to 8. It covers three years of pre-school, often called Balvatika, plus Classes 1 and 2. Next come three more stages, up to Class 12. In short, the early years now get more focus than before.

So, when you visit a school, ask how it teaches the youngest children. Ideally, it should focus on play, stories, songs and hands-on learning, not heavy books.

Admission Process for CBSE Schools in Ahmedabad

Generally, most private CBSE schools in Ahmedabad follow a similar process. However, dates and steps vary. So, check each school’s website.

  1. Shortlist schools. Start 9 to 12 months before the new session.
  2. Attend open days. Many schools hold campus tours between October and January.
  3. Fill the form. Most schools take forms online, often with a small fee.
  4. Interaction or test. Younger children usually have a friendly chat. Older students may take a test.
  5. Offer and fees. If selected, you’ll get an offer. Then, you pay fees to confirm the seat.
  6. Submit documents. Finally, submit certificates and records.

The new session usually starts in April or June. So, many schools open admissions for the next year between October and January.

Age Rule for Class 1 Admission in Gujarat

In Gujarat, a child must be 6 years old on 1 June to join Class 1. This rule has been compulsory since the 2023–24 session. It comes from the state’s Right to Education rules. Also, the Gujarat High Court upheld it in 2023.

So, before you plan, work out your child’s age on 1 June of the year you want to apply. Then, check with the school, since pre-primary age limits can differ.

Documents Usually Needed

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Aadhaar card of the child and parents
  • Recent passport-size photos
  • Proof of address
  • Previous school report card (for older students)
  • Transfer or leaving certificate (for older students)
  • Caste or other certificates, if applying under a quota

How to Prepare Your Child for the School Interaction

Many parents worry about the admission “interview”. But for young children, it’s usually just a friendly chat. Still, a little preparation helps.

  • Keep it light. Tell your child they’re going to meet new teachers. Don’t call it a test.
  • Practise simple talk. For example, let them say their name, their age and what they like.
  • Read together. Picture books help children talk about colours, animals and shapes.
  • Get good sleep. A rested child is a happier child.
  • Stay calm yourself. Kids pick up on your mood. So, relax and smile.

For older students, schools may set a short test in English, maths and science. In that case, revise the basics from their current class.

RTE Admission: Free Seats in Private Schools

Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, private schools must keep 25% of their entry-level seats for children from weaker and disadvantaged groups. These seats are free.

In Gujarat, RTE admissions happen online through the state’s RTE Gujarat portal. For the 2026–27 session, reports say registration ran in April 2026, with a family income limit of ₹6 lakh a year. Parents also chose schools within about 6 km of home. However, rules can change each year. So, always check the portal for the latest details.

Choosing a Stream in Class 11

If your child is joining Class 11, the stream matters a lot. Most CBSE schools in the city offer some mix of these.

  • Science with maths: For engineering, tech and many science careers.
  • Science with biology: For medicine, pharmacy and life sciences.
  • Commerce: For business, finance, accounting and law.
  • Humanities: For law, design, media, social sciences and more.

However, not every school offers every stream or subject. So, check the subject list closely. Also, ask whether the school has tie-ups with coaching institutes, and whether that adds to the fee.

Switching From GSEB to CBSE

Many families move from the Gujarat board to CBSE, often in Class 6, 9 or 11. The good news is that both boards now use NCERT-based books in many subjects. So, the jump is smaller than it used to be.

Still, there are a few things to watch. First, Hindi may be a bigger part of CBSE. Next, English teaching can be more demanding. Finally, board exam patterns differ. So, give your child some extra support in the first few months. Also, ask the new school if it offers bridge classes.

What About Fees?

As you’d expect, CBSE school fees in Ahmedabad vary a lot. Kendriya Vidyalayas are the cheapest. Meanwhile, mid-range private schools charge moderate fees. At the top end, premium schools with big campuses cost much more.

In Gujarat, private school fees are regulated. Under the state’s 2017 fee law, a Fee Regulation Committee (FRC) reviews and approves school fees. So, if a fee looks too high, you can ask the school whether the FRC has approved it.

Hidden Costs to Ask About

  • Admission or one-time fee
  • Transport (school bus)
  • Books and uniforms
  • Activity, trip and event fees
  • Lunch or meal plans
  • Coaching tie-ups for JEE or NEET

Recent CBSE Changes Parents Should Know

Of course, CBSE keeps changing how it teaches and tests. For example, it has announced two board exams a year for Class 10. The first exam is a must. The second is a choice, to help students raise their marks. Also, CBSE keeps adding more questions that test real skills, not just memory. So, ask each school how it’s getting students ready. For the latest news, check the official CBSE website.

School Transport and Safety

Above all, safety matters as much as marks. So, before you choose, ask a few questions.

  • Do school buses have GPS, CCTV and a female attendant?
  • Are drivers and staff checked before hiring?
  • Is the campus gated, with visitor checks?
  • Are there trained nurses and first-aid rooms?
  • How does the school handle bullying?

Red Flags to Watch For

Most schools are honest. However, a few warning signs are worth knowing.

  • No affiliation number: If the school can’t show one, walk away.
  • “CBSE pattern” wording: This can mean a school only copies the syllabus but isn’t affiliated.
  • Affiliation only up to Class 8 or 10: Your child may need to move later.
  • Pressure to pay fast: Good schools give you time to decide.
  • Unclear fees: If the school won’t share a full fee list, be careful.
  • Poor safety: Open gates, unchecked visitors or crowded buses are red flags.

A Simple Admission Timeline

July to September Research schools and make a shortlist

What a Typical School Day Looks Like

Curious about daily life at a CBSE school? While each school is different, most days follow a similar shape. First, the day starts with a morning assembly. Then, students attend six to eight classes, with a short break and a lunch break in between. Along the way, there may be sports, music, art or library periods. Finally, some schools run clubs or extra classes after school.

For younger children, the day is shorter and more playful. For older students, it’s longer and more focused on exams. So, ask each school for its timetable, and check it fits your family’s routine.

Support for Children With Special Needs

Every child deserves a good school. So, if your child needs extra support, ask about it early. For example, find out if the school has a special educator or a counsellor. Also, ask how it adapts lessons and tests. In addition, check if the campus has ramps, lifts and accessible toilets.

Many good schools now follow an inclusive approach. Still, the level of support varies a lot. So, visit, ask clear questions and talk to parents whose children get similar help.

Helping Your Child Settle In

The first few weeks at a new school can be hard. But a few small steps help a lot. First, visit the campus together before day one. Next, keep a steady routine for sleep and meals. Also, talk about the day every evening, and listen more than you speak. Then, meet the class teacher early, and share anything they should know. Finally, be patient. Most children settle within a month or two.
