When Does the Gujarati New Year 2083 Start?
The Gujarati New Year, called Bestu Varas or Nutan Varsh, falls on Kartak Sud 1. That’s the first day of the bright half of Kartak, right after Diwali’s new moon.
In 2026, Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November. However, the new moon (Amas) carries on into Monday, 9 November. So, the new year begins on Tuesday, 10 November 2026. The Gujarat government has also listed 10 November as the Vikram Samvat New Year holiday, and 11 November as Bhai Bij.
That gap of one day between Diwali and Bestu Varas surprises many people. But it’s normal. It simply happens when the new moon stretches across two days. Many families simply spend that day resting, visiting relatives or finishing Diwali chores.
What Is Vikram Samvat?
Vikram Samvat is an old Indian calendar era. Tradition links it to King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. It runs about 56 to 57 years ahead of the English (Gregorian) calendar. That’s why, in 2026, we’re already in the year 2082, and soon 2083.
Many parts of North India also use Vikram Samvat. But there’s one big difference. In the north, the year usually starts in Chaitra, around March or April. In Gujarat, though, the year starts in Kartak, right after Diwali. So, Gujarat celebrates its new year in autumn, while much of the north does it in spring.

How to Convert Vikram Samvat to the English Year
Here’s a simple rule. It works for the Gujarati year, which starts after Diwali.
- From Bestu Varas to 31 December: Subtract 57. For example, 2083 − 57 = 2026.
- From 1 January to Diwali: Subtract 56. For example, 2083 − 56 = 2027.
So, Vikram Samvat 2083 covers the end of 2026 and most of 2027. In the same way, to find the Samvat year from an English date, just add 57 or 56.
The 12 Gujarati Months in Vikram Samvat 2083
The Gujarati year has twelve lunar months. Each month starts the day after a new moon and ends on the next new moon. So, each Gujarati month overlaps two English months. Here’s how they line up in 2083.
| # | Gujarati month | In Gujarati | Roughly falls in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kartak | કારતક | November–December 2026 |
| 2 | Magshar | માગશર | December 2026–January 2027 |
| 3 | Posh | પોષ | January–February 2027 |
| 4 | Maha | મહા | February–March 2027 |
| 5 | Fagan | ફાગણ | March–April 2027 |
| 6 | Chaitra | ચૈત્ર | April–May 2027 |

| 9 | Ashadh | અષાઢ | July–August 2027 |
| 10 | Shravan | શ્રાવણ | August–September 2027 |
| 11 | Bhadarvo | ભાદરવો | September 2027 |
| 12 | Aso | આસો | September–October 2027 |
A few anchor dates help. Kartak begins on 10 November 2026. Chaitra begins on 7 April 2027, the same day as Chaitra Navratri. And Aso begins on 30 September 2027, the first day of Navratri.
When Each Gujarati Month Begins in Vikram Samvat 2083
Each Gujarati month begins on Sud 1, the first day after a new moon. Here’s when every month of the year begins. This helps you work out any Gujarati date in a few seconds.
| Month | In Gujarati | Begins on (Sud 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Kartak | કારતક | Tuesday, 10 November 2026 |
| Magshar | માગશર | Wednesday, 9 December 2026 |
| Posh | પોષ | Friday, 8 January 2027 |
| Maha | મહા | Sunday, 7 February 2027 |
| Fagan | ફાગણ | Tuesday, 9 March 2027 |
| Chaitra | ચૈત્ર | Wednesday, 7 April 2027 |

| Aso | આસો | Thursday, 30 September 2027 |
| Kartak | કારતક | Saturday, 30 October 2027 |
Notice that Kartak appears twice. The first is the start of Vikram Samvat 2083. The second, on 30 October 2027, is the start of Vikram Samvat 2084.
Sud and Vad: The Two Halves of Every Month
Each Gujarati month has two halves of about fifteen days each.
- Sud (સુદ): The bright half. The Moon grows each night, from new moon to full moon. It’s also called Shukla Paksha.
- Vad (વદ): The dark half. The Moon shrinks each night, from full moon to new moon. It’s also called Krishna Paksha.
So, when you hear “Kartak Sud 5,” it means the fifth day of the bright half of Kartak. That’s Labh Pancham. In the same way, “Aso Vad Amas” means the new moon at the end of Aso. That’s Diwali.
The full moon day is called Punam (Purnima), and the new moon day is called Amas (Amavasya). Also, the eleventh day of each half is Agiyaras (Ekadashi), a common fasting day.

What Each Gujarati Month Brings
Kartak (November–December 2026)
Kartak opens the year with joy. First comes Bestu Varas, when families wear new clothes, visit temples and greet elders with “Saal Mubarak.” Next comes Bhai Bij, when sisters pray for their brothers. Then, on Labh Pancham, many traders reopen their shops after the Diwali break. Later, Dev Uthi Agiyaras marks the start of the wedding season. Finally, the month ends with Dev Diwali on Kartak Punam.
Magshar (December 2026–January 2027)
Magshar is a calm, cool month. It’s a popular time for weddings. Also, Gita Jayanti falls in this month.
Posh (January–February 2027)
Posh brings Uttarayan, Gujarat’s kite festival. Rooftops fill with families, music and undhiyu. Also, Posh is traditionally thought less suitable for weddings, so wedding dates often pause for part of this time.
Maha (February–March 2027)
Maha starts with Vasant Panchami, which welcomes spring. Then comes Maha Shivratri, when Shiva temples stay busy all night.
Fagan (March–April 2027)
Fagan is the month of colour. Holi falls on Fagan Punam, and Dhuleti, the day of colours, follows the next day.
Chaitra (April–May 2027)
Chaitra begins with Chaitra Navratri. Later come Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti. Many families also visit Ambaji and other Mata temples in this month.
Vaishakh (May–June 2027)
Vaishakh is a wedding month. Also, Akhatrij (Akshaya Tritiya) is seen as a lucky day to buy gold or start something new.
Jeth (June–July 2027)
Jeth is hot. However, it brings Vat Savitri Vrat, when married women pray for their husbands. Towards the end, the monsoon usually arrives.
Ashadh (July–August 2027)
Ashadh starts with Ahmedabad’s grand Rath Yatra on Ashadhi Bij. Also, young girls keep the Gauri Vrat (Moro Vrat), and women keep Jaya Parvati Vrat. Then, Guru Purnima ends the bright half.
Shravan (August–September 2027)
Shravan is the holiest month for many Gujaratis. People visit Shiva temples every Monday. Also, Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Punam, and Janmashtami follows a week later. Plus, the Jain festival of Paryushan usually begins near the end of Shravan.
Bhadarvo (September 2027)
Bhadarvo brings Ganesh Chaturthi and the Jain day of Samvatsari. Then comes Shraddh (Pitru Paksha), when families remember their ancestors.
Aso (September–October 2027)
Aso is the grand finale. First comes Navratri, nine nights of garba. Then Dussehra, Sharad Punam, Dhanteras, Kali Chaudas and, finally, Diwali on Aso Amas. And the next day, the cycle starts again with Bestu Varas.
Seasons in the Gujarati Calendar
The traditional calendar splits the year into six seasons, called ritus. Each one covers two months.
| Ritu (season) | Months |
|---|---|
| Vasant (spring) | Chaitra, Vaishakh |
| Grishma (summer) | Jeth, Ashadh |
| Varsha (monsoon) | Shravan, Bhadarvo |
| Sharad (autumn) | Aso, Kartak |
| Hemant (pre-winter) | Magshar, Posh |
| Shishir (winter) | Maha, Fagan |
In daily talk, though, most Gujaratis use just three seasons: Shiyalo (winter), Unalo (summer) and Chomasu (monsoon).

Why the Gujarati Year Starts After Diwali
For Gujarat, Diwali isn’t just a festival. It’s also the end of the financial year for many traditional traders. On Diwali, they worship their account books in a ritual called Chopda Pujan. Then, on Bestu Varas, they start fresh.
This custom goes back centuries. Gujarat has long been a land of merchants. So, it made sense for the business year and the calendar year to begin together, right after the year’s biggest festival. Even today, many family businesses in Ahmedabad keep this tradition alive, even though their official accounts follow April to March.

Adhik Maas: The Extra Month
A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year. So, over time, the months would drift away from the seasons. To fix this, the calendar adds an extra month about once every two and a half to three years. This is called Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas.
During Adhik Maas, many families avoid weddings and new beginnings. Instead, they focus on prayer, charity and religious reading. If an Adhik Maas falls in a year, your panchang will show it clearly.
Is There an Adhik Maas in Vikram Samvat 2083?
No. Our calculation shows that every lunar month in Vikram Samvat 2083 contains a solar sankranti. So, there’s no Adhik Maas (extra month) this year. The year has the normal twelve months, from Kartak to Aso.
Kamurta 2026–27: When Are Weddings Paused?
Kamurta, also called Dhanurmas, is the period when the Sun moves through the sign of Dhanu (Sagittarius). Many Gujarati families avoid weddings and other big ceremonies during this time.
In 2026–27, the Sun enters Dhanu on 16 December 2026. Then it moves into Makar (Capricorn) on the night of 14 January 2027. That’s why Makar Sankranti is marked on 15 January. So, Kamurta runs from about 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, and wedding season picks up again after Uttarayan.
How to Read a Gujarati Calendar
A Gujarati wall calendar, or panchang, can look busy at first. But once you know what to look for, it’s easy. Here’s what a typical date box shows.
- English date: The large number in the box.
- Tithi: The lunar day, such as “Sud 5” or “Vad 11.”
- Vaar: The day of the week, in Gujarati.
- Nakshatra: The star the Moon is passing through.
- Festivals and vrats: Fasts, festivals and holy days.
- Sunrise and sunset: Often printed for a main city.
- Choghadiya: Some calendars add good and bad time slots for starting work.
Also, look at the top of each page. It usually shows the Gujarati month, the Samvat year and the matching English month.

Gujarati New Year Greetings
On Bestu Varas, Gujaratis greet each other warmly. Here are the most common wishes.
- Saal Mubarak: The everyday greeting for the new year.
- Nutan Varshabhinandan (નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન): A more formal wish, meaning “greetings for the new year.”
- Navu Varsh Mangalmay Nivde: “May the new year be auspicious.”
Younger people also touch the feet of elders and receive blessings. And of course, every home serves sweets and snacks to visitors all day.
A Bestu Varas Morning: What It Might Feel Like
This is an imagined scene, written to help you picture the day.
It’s still dark when the first crackers go off. Inside the house, the rangoli at the door is fresh, and the diyas from Diwali still flicker. Everyone wears something new.
Then, the family heads to the temple for darshan. On the way back, they stop at an uncle’s house, and then a neighbour’s. At each stop, someone says “Saal Mubarak,” and someone else offers a plate of mathiya, chorafali and sweets. By noon, everyone is full, happy and ready for a nap.
The Gujarati Calendar in Plain Words
The Gujarati calendar follows the Moon. It has twelve months, from Kartak to Aso. Each month has a bright half, Sud, and a dark half, Vad. The new year starts the day after Diwali. In 2026, that’s 10 November. The new year is Vikram Samvat 2083. It ends on Diwali 2027, which is 29 October. After that, Vikram Samvat 2084 begins.
The Gujarati Calendar Explained to Kids
Did you know Gujarat has its own calendar? It follows the Moon instead of the Sun. When the Moon gets bigger each night, that’s called Sud. When it gets smaller, that’s called Vad.
And here’s the fun part. The Gujarati new year doesn’t start on 1 January. It starts the day after Diwali! So, Gujarati kids get to celebrate two new years every year: one with fireworks in November and one with a countdown in January.

How We Made These Calendars
Many calendars copy dates from one another. Instead, we calculated our own. Here’s how, in simple words.
- We worked out the Sun and Moon positions: We used standard astronomy formulas to find where the Sun and Moon are, minute by minute, for the whole year.
- We found the tithi: A tithi changes every time the Moon moves 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. So, we calculated which tithi is in force at sunrise in Ahmedabad each day.
- We named the months: We used the Gujarati (amanta) system, where months end on Amas, and named each month by the Sun’s sign at the new moon.
- We checked our work: Our new moon times matched the timing of the solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 to within a few minutes. Also, our tithis matched published dates for Diwali, Bestu Varas, Holi, Ram Navami, Rath Yatra, Janmashtami, Navratri and Dussehra.
- We added festivals and holidays: Festival dates follow the panchang. Holidays are those Gujarat usually observes, since the official 2027 list isn’t out yet.
Because tithis are based on sunrise in Ahmedabad, a date may differ by a day in another city or country. Also, for exact puja and muhurat timings, please ask your family priest.
